NEW! Kids Costume Workshop Series for Earth Celebrations’ 2012 Hudson River Pageant

Earth Celebrations’ 4th Annual Hudson River Pageant is coordinating a new workshop series JUST FOR CHILDREN that will take place April 15th, 22nd and 29th from 2-4pm on the historic LILAC steamship on the Hudson River to build costume pieces for the 2012 Hudson River Pageant on Saturday, May 12th 1-5pm (rain date May 13th).

The workshops will be exclusively for kids ages 7-12. We will provide art materials and skilled workshop leaders to make fun and colorful fish hats to be worn in the ecological parade portion of the pageant. Suggested donation of $20. THE HUDSON RIVER PAGEANT – SATURDAY MAY 12

A community based ecological art and performance project to restore the native species and habitats of the Hudson River and address climate change.

The project engages the participation of artists, youth, local residents, schools, community centers, and organizations to participate in the project and our three month educational environmental art workshop series from March –May. Participants work with our resident artists to create the spectacular puppets and costumes for the parade. The culminating parade and theatrical pageant follows a route from Battery Park North to Gansevoort Street, in the downtown portion of the Hudson River Park, on Saturday May 12, 2012 (rain date Sunday May 13), from 1-5pm. The parade of spectacular costumes, giant puppets, mobile sculptures, and live musical bands, features 13 site-specific performances at the piers and significant sites along the route. Featured presentations of performance, poems, songs, and dance, celebrate the history, current issues, and future restoration of the river including: Dance of the River Grass, Oyster Planting, Live Fish Release, and Boat Dance.

EARTH CELEBRATIONS is a non-profit environmental arts organization in New York City and since its founding in 1991 created the theatrical pageants and creative advocacy programs for 15 years that led to the preservation of hundreds of community gardens of the Lower East Side and throughout New York City. In 2009, Earth Celebrations launched the Hudson River Pageant Project to raise awareness for the waterfront of downtown Manhattan and highlight the restoration of the Hudson River’s native species and habitats.

LILAC is a 1933 former lighthouse tender that brought supplies to lighthouses and maintained buoys for the U.S. Lighthouse Service and the U.S. Coast Guard. Decommissioned in 1972, she is now owned by the non-profit Lilac Preservation Project. She is the oldest lighthouse tender in America and the only steam-powered tender to survive with her steam engines intact. LILAC is listed on the National Register of Historic Places

SHORT DOCUMENTARY SCREENING

The short documentary “Earth Celebrations Hudson River Pageant” by Fredrik Lassenius & Karen Brücker, has been selected for the official programme of theBig Apple Film Festival at Tribeca Cinemas : Nov. 3-7, 2009.

The “Hudson River Pageant” film is scheduled on opening night Nov. 3- (advance tickets sold on-line)
(program 3, Theater 1) at 8.45.
